CRU proposed Direction related to Interruptible Gas Connections

Open25 Jun, 2026, 12:00 - 5 Aug, 2026, 17:00

Based on multiple engagements with GNI, it has become apparent to the CRU that new large industrial users—primarily data centres and electricity generators—and the new demand they may require, have the potential to have a major impact on the gas system in the near future. Given the likely rapid impact of the expected increase in very large Industrial Customer connections on security of supply of gas, in advance of supply reinforcement, the CRU considers it essential that appropriate action be taken now to protect gas security of supply.

Through this consultation, CRU seeks stakeholder views and comments on proposed CRU Direction introducing a mandatory interruptible product for all new Industrial Customers (peak hourly demand above 50 MWth), except the gas fired generator applicants participating in the SEM and also other options considered in the document.

This CRU consultation does not propose any amendments to the statutory rights of domestic or non-domestic customers to obtain a connection to the gas network. The consultation also does not seek to restrict, delay, or otherwise impede the planned programme of network expansion by GNI. GNI will continue to plan and develop the infrastructure necessary to meet demand from all categories of customers as appropriate.

The CRU seeks comments from interested parties on all of the options outlined in this paper (as well as on the paper generally), and requires that these be received by 17:00 on 5 August 2026. Once responses have been received, reviewed, and considered, the CRU will set out its decision in due course.

The CRU considers Option 4
Interruptible Gas Capacity Connection for all new Industrial Customers except gas fired generator applicants participating in the SEM
as a necessary and proportionate course of action in light of potential significant security of supply issues the gas network may face in the absence of such measure
until reinforcement of the gas network is completed. Please provide views on the options outlined above and offer alternative solutions if you do not agree with the CRU's ‘minded to’ direction.
